RESUMEN CORTO - SHORT SUMMARY
The objective of the study was to assess the palatability and digestive safety of a new dry hypoallergenic diet based on a salmon hydrolysate as the protein source in dogs.
Forty-two healthy adult client-owned dogs were fed exclusively with a new hydrolysed diet, after a 4-day diet transition, for 28 days. The test diet was characterized by its protein source, Atlantic farmed salmon, and its extensive hydrolysis (mean molecular weight: 1.7 kDa, 89% of peptides < 3 kDa, 99% of peptides < 10 kDa). Owners filled in online questionnaires on D0 (basal assessment with usual diets), D7, D14 and D28 to assess palatability, digestive safety, and their general satisfaction.
Digestive parameters were improved in comparison with basal assessment: no diarrhea, reduction of faeces odour, reduction of flatulence. Palatability was described as good or very good by 88% of owners, and 67% of dogs preferred the hydrolysed diet vs their usual diet.
This study showed that the specific extensive hydrolysis performed on the salmon protein had no detrimental effect in dogs: the new diet was highly palatable and well tolerated.
