Head trauma is a relatively common presentation in practice and can be stressful for both the owner and vet involved. This session will summarise a logical approach to head trauma in dogs and cats, including the mechanisms of intracranial pressure regulation and the pathophysiology underlying traumatic brain injury. This will be followed by a step-by-step guide to systemic stabilisation, the medical management of intracranial pressure elevation and neurological assessment in affected animals. Whether corticosteroids should be administered to these cases, and the potential role of advanced interventions will also be discussed.
