Tetanus is an uncommon but potentially fatal disease resulting from neurotoxin production by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. This lecture will focus on a step-wise approach to the management of this debilitating condition in general practice, including identification of the source of infection, reduction of further toxin production and the importance of supportive nursing care until recovery. The use of tetanus antitoxin will also be discussed. With appropriate management, these often intensive cases can be incredibly rewarding to manage in practice.
