Nowadays clinicians involved in reptile medicine has many noninvasive techniques to investigates and provide clinical information about reptile disease. However sometime cytology and biopsy are required to obtain an exact diagnosis in live reptiles. According to the organ involved a different surgical approach must be taken. For coelomic organ in reptiles we could opt for a guided endoscope biopsy or a core biopsy after celiotomy. Small biopsy specimens of soft organs are obtained with scalpel or forceps. If it is necessary to cauterize, it’s preferred to do it after the biopsy is obtained, to avoid coagulation artifacts. For some extended or widespread organs, it’s a good practice to perform more than one biopsy in different sites. Biopsies are usually submitted to histopathologists in 10% neutral buffered formalin in 10 parts formalin to 1-part biopsy.
