New definitions for sepsis and septic shock known as Sepsis-3 in human medicine are very different than veterinary definitions of sepsis and focus on the prediction of mortality. The clinical relevance of this new approach to sepsis is hotly debated in the human literature and is yet to be determined for veterinary patients. This presentation will review these new definitions and consider the limitations and potential impact on diagnosis of sepsis in dogs and cats.
