Cats have only anal sacs while dogs have both anal sacs and hepatoid glands. Most canine hepatoid tumors develop in intact males and are benign (adenoma/epithelioma) and hormone dependent. Hepatoid adenocarcinoma is less frequent and non-hormone-dependent; metastasis to sublumbar lymph nodes is relatively rare; en bloc excision may result in fecal incontinence if more than 180° of the external anal sphincter muscle is excised.
