Hemodynamic stability, analgesia, and suppression of the sympathetic response are sought during general anaesthesia, and this was initially achieved with the use of opioids. However, these drugs have significant side effects that can limit their usefulness or even become contraindicated. There are enough current alternatives to perform opioid-free anesthesia in human medicine with the use of other drugs as well as advanced loco-regional anaesthesia, but are we prepared for such in veterinary medicine? We must ensure an improvement in recovery after surgery and a reduction in hospitalization times, as long as intra and postoperative analgesia is ensured (recognition of pain in non-verbal patients).
We will review the advantages and disadvantages of this aesthetic technique as well as the described evidence for its use in veterinary medicine.
