Bleeding disorders in dogs are not uncommon presentations. The first step in the approach to these cases is establishing if there is a disorder of thrombostasis or an issue with the bleeding organ itself.
Immune mediated thrombocytopenia would be expected to result in very low platelet counts, which can help discriminate from other causes.
Once a thrombocytopenia is establish to be the cause of the bleeding screening is ideally carried out to exclude triggers. Immune suppression is the mainstay of treatment. Rationale use of gastrointestinal protectants will also be discussed in this case based lecture.
