The keratinized skin in reptiles acts as an important anatomic barrier between the environment and the animal. Dermatologic disorders in reptiles are routinely encountered in veterinary practice, but the establishment of a thorough and adequate diagnostic and therapeutic approach is often challenging for these otherwise highly visible conditions. Most skin diseases in reptiles are primarily a consequence of substandard husbandry and underlying disease that may facilitate the onset of secondary bacterial and fungal skin infections. A number of infectious agents, however, have been primarily associated with dermatological disease in reptiles. Although, the primary clinical manifestation of the observed skin lesions and the involved species often dictate the selection of initial investigational procedures, the importance of a multidirectional approach cannot be overly emphasized. Once the correct etiological diagnosis is made and husbandry issues are dealt with, an appropriate treatment may be initiated. This lecture will cover the etiology and clinical pathology of the most important reptile skin disorders and general as well as specific diagnostic and therapeutic procedures will be discussed.
