Congenital heart disease (CHD) is associated with high morbidity and mortality in young dogs making early detection important to mitigate its consequences. The three most common congenital heart defects on dogs are patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), pulmonary valve stenosis (PS) and sub-aortic stenosis (SAS) and safe and efficient surgical and interventional procedures are increasingly available for these diseases. PDAs have been extensively studied over the last two decades and a variety of surgical and interventional techniques are currently available. In this lecture we aim to review the main aspects of diagnosis and treatment of a selection of CHD including PDA and atrial septal defects (ASD), focusing in well-established and alternative techniques for treatment of congenital heart disease.
