Gastrointestinal protectants are widely used in veterinary medicine for a wide range of clinical signs or conditions. However, there are few studies supporting their efficacy, and most of them are based in healthy dogs and cats. We should consider various aspects before prescribing them: Will they benefit my patient? How can I measure their efficacy and beneficial effect? Did I provide the right instructions to use it and to stop it? Shall I worry about its adverse reactions? The ACVIM consensus statement: Support for rational administration of gastrointestinal protectants to dogs and cats were recently published, in 2018. This talk will share some of its conclusions, including the evidence on their use in veterinary medicine.
