Rachel Casey

After qualifying as a vet, Rachel worked in mixed first opinion practice for several years. An interest in the behaviour of dog, cat and horse patients led to a post graduate qualification and specialising in veterinary behaviour, and subsequently a PhD in cat behaviour with Cats Protection. Rachel worked in academia, mainly at Bristol Vet School for 14 years, where she taught students and ran a referral clinic in veterinary behaviour, as well as running a research group investigating various aspects of cat and dog behaviour, welfare and epidemiology. Rachel is a UK Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Behavioural Medicine, and a European Veterinary Specialist in both Veterinary Behavioural Medicine and Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law. She is widely published in peer reviewed journals and an international speaker in veterinary behaviour and welfare. Having moved to Dogs Trust in 2016, she became Director of Canine Behaviour and Research in 2017. She leads a team of trainers and behaviourists working with dogs in rehoming centres but also in Dog School an exciting programme of preventative education and training for dog owners. She also manages a research team conducting a range of projects from epidemiology to dog behaviour. This includes Generation Pup - a cohort study investigating early life influences on a range of health and behaviour outcomes that impact on the welfare of dogs. Rachel is also responsible for a team working on behavioural insights and impact assessment, with aim of influencing human behaviour for the benefit of dog welfare and making sure activities in the charity have the optimal impact for dogs.
