For the first time in 50 years, we’re going to start seeing pets’ life expectancy decline because of the obesity problem. “Like humans, pets need to be at a healthy weight,” said Alex German, Professor of Small Animal Medicine at the University of Liverpool, UK. “This is a very complex issue though and one that requires understanding and commitment from both pet owners and vets”. Pet obesity came to people’s attention about a decade ago, and concerns among veterinarians and researchers have only risen each year. Covid-19 has intensified this issue. Good news from the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) and Zoetis: key findings show that the human-animal bond is universally valued and recognized among pet owners: 95% consider their pet a part of their family, 86% would pay whatever it takes if their pet needed extensive veterinary care and 76% say they would make major life changes for their pet, if necessary. COVID-19 prompted veterinary care to change. Despite industry challenges and changes, the veterinarian remains central to pet health care, but practices must adapt to keep pace with the strong demand for veterinary services. With all this in mind how do we position pet obesity as top priority in our practices? How we coordinate and empower our teams to address the problem from the lens of prevention and management impacting positively this epidemic, helping this pet owners that trust us, making their pets to live longer.
