Imaging is not only used to diagnose patients with cancer, but also for staging and therapeutic planning. Different types of cancer will require different imaging protocols. Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used because is has shown great benefits for both staging and surgical planning. The strength of CT scanning lies in its high spatial resolution, allowing for good anatomical characterization of disease. Besides CT, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is essential in diagnosing patients with neoplasia related to the nervous system. Few veterinary studies have show promise for improved detection of malignancy, more thorough staging of canine cancer and determination of early response and disease recrudescence by using positron emission tomography (PET)/CT. PET imaging is able to characterize tissue based on functions such as metabolic rate, after injection of radiolabelled tracers. Because PET/CT scanners are not yet commonly used in veterinary medicine and not often available, this lecture will focus on the use of CT and MRI as advanced imaging modalities in oncology patients.
